RWorld Directory of Modern Military Vehicler, Bart Vanderveen, 63382, Frederick Warne, Eğitim Kitapları, Kişisel Gelişim, Yabancı Dilde Kitaplar

Introduction

Military motor vehicles, particularly the 'softskin' highmobility allwheel-drive variety, keep attracting the attention of an ever-increasing number of people outside the realms of their manufacturers and users. Today, there is unprecedented activity in this field and many of the heavy-duty vehicles used by armed forces around the world are also available for civil service. On the other hand, many military vehicles are just more or less modified and militarized versions of civilian types.

Covering the period of the 1970s and early 1980s, this Directory continues from The Observer's Military Vehicles Directory - from 1945 which deals with the post-war period up to around 1970, and which in turn followed two volumes covering the pre-1940 era and the Second World War (The Observer's Army Vehicles Directory - to 1940 and The Observ ers Fighting Vehicles Directory- World War II respectively)

In all four books it is apparent that attention has not been focused solely on the well-known mass-produced types of vehicle but that equal consideration has been given to experimental models which never received the nod and thereforeremained in the prototype stage. Since such vehic may still be encountered, either 'in the metal' or in books, films and the like, it is strongly felt that these- often quite advanced - specimens are worthy of mention and that reference works like the present volume would not be complete without them.

This new title differs from the preceding ones in three important respects. First, the shape has changed to a more conventional format (already adopted for several other Warne's Directories). Secondly, a large number of vehicle entries have been given more comprehensive treatment than before, with larger pictures and more details, and, thirdly, the vehicles have been classed by type, rather than by country. This classing by type has proved more practical. Many of today's military vehicles are not even used in their country of origin but only exported, while others were or are sold in their own and to many different foreign nations, sometimes with detail modifications. The world has become 'smaller' and it s considered justified to deal with the vehicles on a world wide basis.

Quite noticeable, when compared with the previous volumes, is the number of military trucks manufactured or part- manufactured in socalled 'developing' nations and othercountries where automotive activities had formerly been confined to importation and small-scale assembly, exemplified by Brazil, Greece. South Korea, the Philippines and South Africa. Some of these countries try vigorously to sell thei products to other nations, in addition to supplying their own armed forces. Although the main aim is clearly to be independent from imports, a prominent factor is the possibility of selling these vehicles abroad in order to earn foreign currency and to reduce unit costs

This Directory has been compiled with the aid of the best available source material, provided largely by the manufactur ers - who, with a few exceptions, have been most cooperative and to some extent by various governments' military authorities, to all of whom a debt is due. Certain gaps have been filled most amicably by friends and other contacts from many countries. Thanks are due particularly to George Avramidis, Günter Buchwald, Colonel Robert J. Icks, Erik van Ingen Schenau, Jean-Gabriël Jeudy and Laurie A. Wright, who have made important contributions. Others who deserve mention include (in alphabetical order): Oliver Barnham, Sven Bengtson, Fred Crismon, H. Denis, Aimé van Ingelgom, Yuichi Ishikawa, William F. Murray, Yasuo Ohtsuka, R. T. P. Peacock Mark Priestley, J. C. M. Probst, Malcolm J. R. Smith, Ed Storey Dick Vredeveld, Shin Yoshino and Norman Weeding. To al these contributors, as well as those who are not mentioned by name, gratitude is extended. Yet, in spite of much care, inaccuracies are virtually impossible to eliminate altogether Moreover, it must be appreciated that many of the vehicles presented in this book were still in the development stage with specifications subject to change. Other modern vehicles could be adapted to meet specific customers requirements, there being many options available in terms of alternati engines and transmissions, wheelbase and tyre sizes, different body types, etc

Contributions for future editions will always be welcome, in orm of additional and updated information, better pictures ned the f (in a number of cases) and corrections. After all, as mentio in the pre determined by the degree of accuracy of its contents ceding volume, the value of a work of this kind is determied by the degree of accuracy of its contens.
